As we roll inexorably toward the glitz and glamor of the Junos, ABM|Online will be on the ground, sussing business angles out of the Artise. Any help is, well, helpful – so if you’ve got a hot tip, a story idea, or a strong opinion – drop me a line.
Today, I popped into O’Brien’s Music Store, “The oldest store on the oldest street in the oldest city in North America”, for to see what Mr. Gordon O’Brien thought of this whole “Junos” thing.
ABM: So what do you think? Are the Junos going to be good for business? GO: Sure. There are a lot of musicians coming to town, they’ll be buying supplies (picks, strings and straps) and their instruments might need adjustment if they take a couple knocks on the plane. Some musicians won’t bother bringing instruments, they’d sooner rent sometimes, so we’ll be doing that.
ABM: Are you doing anything special to get ready then? GO: Nope. But we’ll be keeping lots of accessory stock on hand, like I was saying. CD sales should also be very brisk — people hearing someone play and wanting to purchase their music.
ABM: How about businesses outside of your own? GO: Well it should be good, shouldn’t it. People will be bringing a lot of new money — everyone will be busy — call it a boost to a normally quiet time of year.
ABM: And it probably wouldn’t be a bad time to be a local musician… GO: It’ll be great exposure for all the local musicians. Industry people, promoters, marketers, distributors, they’ll be looking for new outlets. Over all it’s the exposure that’s the bottom line — the Industry is coming to them. ABM: There’s only one Newfoundlander nominated, Amelia Curran — any thoughts? GO: I can’t say much, but we do sell her product, and lots of it. She’s a great singer and songwriter.
If you don’t know her, here’s a video of Amelia Curran. If you like what you see, head over to her website, where you can find more videos, and even download her new single.
